Until the early 1990s, the wound healing industry was made up of a small number of products. Wet to dry dressings were the standard using simple cotton gauze. That all changed when our founder, Dr. Manoj K Jain, discovered how to preserve the collagen molecule and manufacture products. This molecule, when properly preserved, would create the foundation for our business and the entire advanced wound care industry.
In 1991, the FDA cleared for sale Kollagen™ products based on Dr. Jain’s collagen technology. With these products, healthcare professionals gained the ability to directly interact with the wound and take control of the healing process for the first time. After 10 years of extensive use, the Department of Health and Human Services listened to clinicians, recognized these benefits, and created an entirely new category of Medicare reimbursement codes for collagen. The new availability of insurance payments for collagen products would pave the way for other collagen products to be developed. Ultimately, it would take ten years after the release of our first Kollagen™ products for a competitor to receive FDA cleared for a collagen product. Now collagen is the standard for wound care, and Kollagen is the standard for collagen.
