Which wounds should SkinTemp® II Collagen Sheets be used with?

SkinTemp® II Collagen Sheets are intended for the management of burns, sores, open blisters, scrapes, ulcers, and other wounds. The sheets are porous collagen membranes that are designed to be permeable and breathable, with fluid control similar to skin. They are flexible, pliable, elastic, and durable for ease of application. SkinTemp® II is appropriate for laying into a larger surface wound bed. It can be cut to fit the shape of the wound and placed into tunneling or undermining and layered to fill a larger cavity.
SkinTemp® II Collagen Sheets bioactively interact with the wound microenvironment on a cellular and molecular level, assisting the body’s natural healing process. SkinTemp® II is 100% non-hydrolyzed type 1 bovine native collagen. Human BioSciences, Inc.’s proprietary Kollagen™ technology process protects and retains significantly more native triple helical protein structure, thus allowing superior stability of the molecule and scaffolding through all four phases of wound healing.

Indication for use:

Are there any wounds you should not use collagen particles on?

Yes, SkinTemp® II is not appropriate for third-degree burns or patients with bovine sensitivities. Wounds that are extremely dry may not be appropriate. Consider using HBS Collatek® Collagen Gel which donates moisture while providing collagen molecules to the wound bed. However, SkinTemp® II may be moistened with normal saline. Remember all packets are intended for one-time use and the package is only sterile until opened.

How do you apply SkinTemp® II Collagen Sheets?

  1. Cleanse the wound with mild soap and water, saline solution or wound cleanser.
  2. Stop any bleeding by applying gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad or cloth.
  3. Cut SkinTemp® II to fit or fold to fit directly on the open area and tuck into any crevice.
  4. Apply the white side directly in contact with the wound surface. If the wound is dry (without drainage), SkinTemp® II may be moistened with water or normal saline before applying, to encourage moist wound healing.
  5. Cover with a dry clean bandage to keep the wound clean and prevent infection.
These products may stay in place for up to 7 days if drainage is controlled and the external dressing remains intact and unsoiled.

Product Removal:

  1. Change dressing when the bandage becomes wet with drainage or soiled
  2. Remove the bandage, and repeat the steps under product application including cleansing
  3. Use SkinTemp® II dressing until the wound is fully healed.
  4. If the edges of the product have adhered to intact skin, simply saturate during the cleansing process and the product will wipe off easily.
Wounds produce less fluid as they heal, if the dressing is dry on removal consider increasing the time between changes or try our Collatek® Collagen Gel which donates moisture while continuing to provide the benefits of collagen to the healing wound bed.

How do you determine how often dressing changes should occur?

SkinTemp® II Collagen Sheets can stay in place up to 7 days if the cover dressing is not soiled and border is intact. As wounds heal the expectation is the wound will produce less exudate over time and drainage can help determine dressing change intervals. If the wound is producing enough drainage that the cover dressing is saturated, that timing would be appropriate initially. Upon dressing change when the wound appears dry, the interval can be extended. Follow your facility protocols as a basic recommendation.
